Remodeling Project
Top line

A construction project, the fifth in a series of Americans with Disabilities upgrades, began at the Main Library on April 1, 2002. The final touches were completed in August.

The project included demolition of the existing circulation desks and creation of an efficient checkout area complete with handicap-accessible counters. The reconfiguration of the front desk also meant improvements to the way the Library does business on a daily basis, including a self-check-out station. In addition, an exterior bookdrop was added to Superior Street and a new pay phone and TDD were added to the inside lobby area, and worn carpeting in the entrance and the stairwells were replaced.

These upgrades are made possible by funding from the City of Duluth and with a State of Minnesota Library Accessibility Grant. Work previously done includes:

  • Replacement of drinking fountains with ADA compliant fixtures
  • Automatic door operators at Michigan and Superior Street entrances
  • Upgrade to the automatic fire detection system including audible and visual warnings in compliance with ADA
  • Elevator upgraded with ADA compliant controls for audio and visual impairments.
