"This is a view of the Duluth harbor and breakwater looking south from Mesabe Avenue. According to a plate once on the frame, Luther Mendenhall, who was the first President of the Duluth Library Association in 1869, gave this painting to the City of Duluth in 1917. The painting was at the Duluth Public Library by 1949, where it still hangs. This painting is a relatively early work by the artist, painted before his first trip west brought [him] national attention." - American art collector Michael D. Schroeder
