ALA CODE OF ETHICS
- The Library is guided by the principles of the ALA Code of Ethics.

COMMUNICATION - We seek a free and open expression of ideas and encourage a high level of honest, accurate and timely communication recognizing the value of sharing thoughts, agendas and expectations.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS - We work with other organizations and agencies, combining resources, talents and expertise, to provide opportunities, programs and services which benefit the public and increase the visibility of the Library in the community.

CUSTOMER EDUCATION - We provide instruction and educational opportunities for customers to enhance their use and enjoyment of the Library.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK - We seek out and act upon ongoing feedback from both internal and external customers.

CUSTOMER SERVICE - We provide the best possible service with an attitude of openness and helpfulness, which begins before the question is asked.

DIVERSITY - We value people's diversity and seek to nurture and utilize it in fulfilling our mission.

FAIR AND EQUAL ACCESS - We uphold the right of equal access to information, materials and services for all.

FORMATS - We provide collections and services that reflect a variety of formats by which information and entertainment are conveyed.

INNOVATION - We encourage innovation to improve library services and seek to challenge our assumptions, providing an atmosphere which encourages a positive attitude toward purposeful change.

LIFE-LONG LIBRARY USE - We value services that make available materials, information and activities for people of all ages, maintaining a diversity that satisfies and challenges everyone while promoting life-long library use.

MATERIALS ACCESS - We provide ease and depth of access to the Library collection through comprehensive and skilled cataloging and organization.

PARTNERS - We work with the Library Board, the Friends of the Duluth Public Library and the Duluth Library Foundation to deliver the best possible library service.

REGIONAL COLLECTIONS - We acquire and provide access to historical resources and government information, emphasizing Duluth and the Arrowhead region.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - We manage our resources efficiently and effectively.

SAFETY - We provide a safe, clean and comfortable environment.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT - We provide opportunities for professional development and continuing skill-enhancement, ensuring effective use of staff and stimulating creativity and innovation within the Library.

TEAMWORK - We achieve our goals through collaborative efforts which are based on mutual respect.
