The "Third Thursday" Book Group at the Two Harbors Public Library will discuss "Clara and Mr. Tiffany." Visitors who wish to join the discussion are welcome. This is a good opportunity to share some initial thoughts about the book and be ready for the range of related activities offered in the region at later dates. "Not Small Souled Creatures:" Women in the Labor Movement in the Western Lake Superior Region, 1880 - 1930

In March 1914, a letter from Orvokki of Pike, MN, appeared in Toveritar, a women's socialist magazine. The letter said, "We women of Pike ought to show that we are people too, and not small souled creatures." Local historian and retired University of Wisconsin-Superior professor Richard Hudelson will talk about women workers and labor activists in the Northland at the turn of the 20th century, focusing on how impressive they were as thinking, feeling, active, "big souled" people.

 

Glass Artists Presentation with Show-and-Tell

Two Harbors Public Library, 320 County Highway 20, Two Harbors
Local glass artists Michael Tonder and Jody Freij-Tonder will discuss their process of kiln-formed glass and their lives as artists. They will bring some of their finished pieces, show stages of the process and demonstrate glass-cutting. Michael creates bowls and large-form glass sculptures, mostly from plate glass. Jodycreates jewelry and other small pieces from colored glass. Other area glass artists, hobbyists and students are invited to bring pieces to share in a show-and-tell at the end of the program. Children can celebrate spring with a fun craft project. Beginning with the first day of spring, children at preschool story time will make a paper version of a stained glass sun catcher. School-age children will be able to make and take the project via a craft table in the Children's Section of the Cloquet Public Library.

 

I Spy Pentominoes!

For older children and teens. Try your hand at pentominoes: a mathema-tical tool consisting of 12 pieces, each made up of five squares that share at least one side. Challenge yourself by creating a pentominoes puzzle from the sheet provided. Inspired by "Chasing Vermeer" by Blue Balliett.

Have an interesting piece of old glass? Dan Sershon of Northland Estate Services will show glass pieces from his personal collection and then be available for free glass appraisals. You may bring two items per person for informal verbal identification and evaluation. If the piece is too large or fragile, bring clear photos and a description of any marks or labels.

Lake Superior Art Glass owner Dan Neff will demonstrate glass torch work. His shop features glasswork of all types, including torch and furnace work, stained glass and fused glass by regional artists. Shopping time will be available following the demonstration. April 6: 2 - 3:30 pm   April 13: 10 am - 4 pm
For teens in grades 6-12. Help create a stained glass-mural on the teen area windows! Everyone is welcome to contribute ideas for mural images about how you use the library: reading, of course, but do you take your book outside? Read to your little brother? Or your dog? Borrow music and listen while you skateboard? Watch movies while hanging out with friends? Tell us on Saturday, April 6, and we'll design a mural showing all those activities. Then put on your painting clothes and help paint the windows on Saturday, April 13. Come for the whole day or for just a part of it. We'll provide the paint, brushes and instruction.

 

Colorful Candle Jars
Monday, April 8, 2013  --  10:30 - 11:30 am  OR  1 - 2 pm

Duluth Public Library Green Room, 520 W. Superior St., Duluth
For children ages 5 and up. Duluth Art Institute staff will help children create a stained-glass-effect candle jar using mason jars, tissue paper and Mod Podge. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited to 25 participants per session. Register at the library's Youth Services desk or call 218-730-4200/option 4.


Tiffany Stained Glass Tour - Sorry, tour is full

Board the bus at the Cloquet Public Library at 9 and arrive at The Depot in Duluth about 9:45. We'll see the Tiffany windows there and pick up additional passengers before heading out to First Presbyterian Church and Aftenro Home. The tour ends at Pilgrim Congregational Church with a presentation by author/filmmaker Jack Salmela. The bus will return to drop people off at the Depot and Cloquet Public Library. Cost: $5 in advance; make checks to the Cloquet Shaw Memorial Library Foundation. Reservations are required. Contact Mark at 218-879-1531.

Celebrating Stained Glass in the Northland

Local author and filmmaker Jack Salmela will speak about some of the beautiful, old stained glass art in Duluth. You do not need to take the tour of Tiffany stained glass to attend this free presentation.

Stop by and study the Tiffany windows that grace the sanctuary. At 2:30 and 3:15 there will be screenings of "Celebrating Stained Glass in the Northland: Its Beauty, Its Story, episode 1," a short film by Jack Salmela about the history of Duluth and the windows at Pilgrim. Art historian Julie L'Enfant will explore the impressive development of the arts in Minnesota in the twentieth century through the lives and works of several women artists: Elsa Laubach Jemne, muralist and painter; Clara Mairs, printmaker, painter, and decorative artist; Jo Lutz Rollins, watercolorist and professor of art; and Evelyn Raymond, sculptor and teacher.
