Lecture:
Jay Gatsby and the American Dream
Monday, April 24, 2006 7:30 p.m.
Duluth Public Library Green Room, 520 W. Superior St.
The Great Gatsby offers readers an eloquent sense of the
magic of the Jazz Age: the shifting fashions, the sensual mores,
the landscape of wealth. Underlying this magic, though, is a sharp
interrogation of the American Dream of progress, self-advancement,
growth towards maturity. Tom Zelman, professor of English at the
College of St. Scholastica, will speak about the forces at play
in the novel: love, ambition and, especially, money. In Gatsby,
Fitzgerald both celebrates the material culture and calls attention
to the damage that seems to stem from it.
