The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn may be too difficult for readers younger than 9th grade. The following books have been selected for younger readers. The goal of the K-6 selections is that kids will know more about the Mississippi River and its impact on people's lives.

Questions for Grades K - 6:
1. What do you know about the Mississippi River that you didn't know before you read this book?

2. Did this book remind you of past experiences, people, or events in your life?

3. Did it make you think of anything happening in the news, around school, or in other books you have read?

4. What questions came to mind while you were reading?

5. What questions would you like to ask the author?

6. What question would you like to investigate further?

7. Which lines or sections in the text caught your attention? Was something important, puzzling, beautiful, strange, well written, controversial, or striking in some way?

 

Questions for Grades 7 - 12:
1. What did you notice when you read this book?

2. How did what you read make you feel?

3. How can you relate what you read to your own life?

4. What are the different ways that the characters deal with challenges?

5. Who do you think are the heroes in this book? Why?

6. How would the characters' lives be different if they hadn't been together?

7. How would your life be different if you had lived in the era when this book was set?

8. How would the characters' lives be different if they were living today?
