The selection for the third annual
Reading: Bridge to a Wider World project is The Adventures
of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Once again, everyone
in the area is encouraged to read and discuss the book.
Huckleberry Finn, rebel against
school and church, casual inheritor of gold treasure, and savior
of Jim, the runaway slave, is the archetypal American maverick.
Shunning civilization and respectability, Huck Finn shoves off
with Jim on a raft journey down the Mississippi River. As Huck
learns about love, responsibility, and how to make moral choices,
the trip becomes a metaphoric voyage through his own soul.
The Duluth Public Library's Reading:
Bridge to a Wider World Committee is planning community-wide events,
most occuring during April, 2004. A resource guide is available
at local bookstores and libraries, and the same information is
available online - see the list of links above.

The Project Committee
wishes to dedicate this year's area-wide reading project to the
memory of Essie Ledyard.
Essie contacted the Duluth Public
Library in the fall of 2000 and encouraged the Library to sponsor
a "One Book, One Community" project.
Thank you, Essie, for
your inspiration. |
