Film: OSAMA
Saturday, April 5, 2008    1:30 p.m.
The Depot, Ruth Maney Room, 506 W. Michigan St.
A 12-year-old Afghan girl and her mother lose their jobs when the Taliban closes the hospital where they work and with both father and brother dead, there is no-one left to support the family. Lacking the male escort required by the Taliban, the mother is unable to leave the house and is forced to disguise her daughter as a boy called Osama so "he" can leave home to find work. "Osama" embarks on a terrifying and confusing journey as she tries to keep the Taliban from finding out her true identity. The first film made in Afghanistan since the end of the Taliban regime. In Pashtu with English subtitles. Rating: PG-13.

Islamic Education and Social Justice
Monday, April 7, 2008    7 p.m.
The Depot, Ruth Maney Room, 506 W. Michigan St.
Dr. Sabah Alwan, Islamic expert and Associate Professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at the College of St. Scholastica, will talk about how Islam views education in terms of human rights and how Western idealolgy is in conflict with education in the Islamic world. With the emphasis on education in Three Cups of Tea, this should be an interesting discussion of education, social justice and humanity.

U.S. - Afghan Relations
Monday, April 14, 2008   7 p.m.
The Depot, Ruth Maney Room, 506 W. Michigan St.
UWS Professor of Political Science Khalil Dokhanchi will discuss the history of American involvement in Afghanistan, as well as its rise as a hot spot in the Cold War and its subsequent decline in importance after the fall of Soviet Union. The rise of the fundamentalist Taliban regime was largely ignored by the U.S. until the September 11, 2001 attacks. By assisting in toppling the Taliban, the U.S. has become intricately involved in Afghan affairs. The questions now are what does the U.S. want in Afghanistan, what is the current policy, and will that current policy achieve U.S. aims.

Afghans for Afghans
Monday, April 21, 2008    6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
The Depot, Great Hall, 506 W. Michigan St.
If you're handy with a needle, join in sewing together knitted squares to create afghans to send to Afghanistan. Bring a tapestry needle and any squares you've finished but please join us even if you haven't knit or crocheted any squares. Information: Melanie Grune, 722-5267. Details of this project may be found below.

To celebrate the spirit of THREE CUPS OF TEA, people are invited to help make afghans to send to "Afghans for Afghans." This organization has delivered hand-knitted and crocheted blankets, mittens, socks, hats, sweaters, and vests to men, women, and children in Afghanistan since 2001.

To participate, knit or crochet afghan squares that are 8 inches by 8 inches. Please use wool, mohair or alpaca yarn to maximize warmth and do not include any "representational images" such as people, animals, religious or national symbols. Avoid lacy patterns and light colors that will show dirt. It takes 48 squares for each afghan so please make as many as you'd like. The more we have, the more people who will be kept warm through our efforts.

Squares can be dropped off at Northern Lights Books & Gifts or any Duluth Public Library location through April 18, 2008. See above for information about an April 21 gathering to sew the squares into afghans.

For more information and for other items you can donate for this cause, see www.afghansforafghans.org.
