The author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet will talk about his book and explore related issues, including discrimination against people who are different than others in their community.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase and autographing.

Reading "Hotel" in its Historical Context

Discrimination is a prominent theme in Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Judge Mark Munger will talk about how the Chinese Exclusion Act, in effect from 1882 to 1943, tied into discrimination of various groups in America, including the Finnish community of northeastern Minnesota. Mungers novel, Suomalaiset: People of the Marsh, also deals with this topic and will be available for purchase and autographing. There will a question and answer period after the talk.

Reflections on Growing Up Japanese-Chinese-American in Henry and Keiko's Neighborhood

Bilin Tsai was born and raised in Seattle's Central Area, about a mile from the setting of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Her Japanese American mother was born and raised in San Diego and forced to relocate with her family during World War II. Her Taiwanese father immigrated to the U.S. in 1938 to continue his education as war broke out in Asia. Dr. Tsai will share her experiences as a Japanese-Chinese-American growing up in Seattle during the '50s, and reflect on where her childhood resonated with the lives of Henry and Keiko. Dr. Tsai is currently Interim Associate Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry at UMD.

 

Bitter and Sweet: The Asian-American Experience in World War II Minnesota

Author/historian Dave Kenney will talk about Asian Americans in Minnesota during the World War II era, including the training of Japanese American men at the state's Military Intelligence Service Language School. Those men, in turn, arranged for family and friends to move from internment camps to the Twin Cities, thereby beginning a Japanese-American community in Minnesota.

Asian American comedian Eliot Chang will perform stand-up comedy; a discussion on diversity and Asian-American stereotypes in the media will follow.

Time of Fear (2002): During World War II, thousands of Japanese Americans were relocated from their homes to two camps in rural Arkansas. This documentary explores that ordeal and how it affected the men, women, and children who were uprooted because of their appearance and heritage.
