Book Selection Process
Among the criteria that the committee uses in making the annual book selection are:

  • Availability of the book in multiple formats
  • Availability of film versions of the book
  • A provocative read at a reading level appropriate for high school
  • Part of the high school curriculum
  • Will it appeal to both men and women
  • Suggestions from previous program evaluation forms

How can you participate?

Get the books. Look for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and/or The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate at the library or buy a copy at your local bookstore.

Read. Between now the end of April, join your family and friends in reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and/or The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate.

Get a Reader's Guide. A free resource guide is being developed for participants to use when organizing their discussion groups. Discussion guides will be available at the Duluth Public Library and your local bookstore in March, or find the same information here on this website.

Discuss. Organize a book club at your home, community center, senior center, coffee house or place of worship, and discuss the fascinating characters and themes as well as the historical and cultural significance
